YomaBarr An insider gem from New Zealand, and all the musician's heart in it.
Reminds me a bit of Worsen's Cursed to Witness Life. Which means the ways of dealing with loss and grief are similar around the globe...

Abandoned 05:25
Unbearable weight of mine Slowly crushing inside Time takes its toll Nothing left, my life disposed Living serves to rot what memories remain No peace to be found Nothing left to numb this pain What waking nightmare Has come to be I have no love of self or love for thee This life that I know - so dismal, so low Is surely ending for me Now in the silence of our suffering We listen to the lies we tell ourselves Seeking empathy, seeking solace Finding nothing Lies we tell ourselves Breaking the cycle comes to no avail Reaching out for help, yet sinking still Why carry on, everything has failed I’m all alone, no comfort to feel The spiral goes full tilt No turning back, my choice fulfilled Now in the silence of our suffering We listen to the lies we tell ourselves Seeking empathy, seeking solace Finding nothing Lies we tell ourselves Despair not the choice that I’ve made The pain too terrible to tolerate Now I rest my weary mind Finally sweet silence I find Now in the silence of our suffering We listen to the lies we tell ourselves Seeking empathy, seeking solace Finding nothing Lies we tell ourselves

Waves 05:23
The wood casket whispers as we say goodbye Have you found your peace, and have you reached the other side? Everyone is here beside you If you only realized That you weren’t all alone, those were only lies Now the waves pull us under We’re drowning in our minds We should have felt this coming, like the moon pulling the tides But our hearts have been emptied, no hope to provide The only thing to cling to are memories in time So give us back that day and we could better recognize All that pain that was inside you that was blind to our eyes We could be so much better if we only saw the signs All we have left knowing is your spirit’s on the other side The tears of your mother flooded through the wake A final torrent of a storm that had to break But they couldn’t wash away the wreckage left behind There’s nothing in this world that can take back time Now the waves pull us under We’re drowning in our minds We should have felt this coming, like the moon pulling the tides But our hearts have been emptied, no hope to provide The only thing to cling to are memories in time I would give it all away Just for one more day I would give up all I have Just to get you back So give us back that day and we could better recognize All that pain that was inside you that was blind to our eyes We could be so much better if we only saw the signs All we have left knowing is your spirit’s on the other side

The first death has come and now it follows us Everything has changed, in ceremony we trust The people have gathered, now we must begin A time of mourning Has been ushered in The materials are gathered, each village arrives To work together And carry out the rites The people worried how Coyote would receive The death of his father, in all uncertainty So they kept him out, but he would not stay He leapt into the pyre, taking his father’s heart away The first to die, promised to return As the full moon, after the pyre burns So we raise the pole, painted with funeral signs Then burnt it down under pale moonlight Now we cut our hair As we hold on To what left we have Our old world is gone But resolve is there Our will is strong We continue these traditions As our mourning goes on

Remembrance 04:11
We won’t forget those who’ve left this side Those who meant more than any words describe We’ll build our alters, we’ll build our shrines We’ll hold you close to us Forever in time Your name Sanctified Calling Breath of Life As I look to the sky, I sing your name We won’t leave you behind You’ll never fade away We’ll carve out a place, a home you can stay In our hearts forever, you will always remain We’ll tell the children We’ll tell the tribe All about your life And how bright you shined More than moon More than the stars You were larger than life We will never forget who you are Your name Sanctified Calling Breath of Life As I look to the sky, I sing your name We won’t leave you behind You’ll never fade away We’ll carve out a place, a home you can stay In our hearts forever, you will always remain I sing your name I sing your name

about

This album was created as a means of processing the loss of numerous people in my life who have passed away, many of which were by choice, some of which were not. It is a narrative of why they felt they had to go, how those of us who remain process that loss, what cultural protocols our people enact in response to this event, where we believe they return to, and how much meaning we place into remembering them. It weaves together true personal experiences of death with interpretations of our creation stories and ceremonial practices. It is equally about loss and grief as it is of remembrance and celebration. Burnt Lodge is the representation of a home now gone, of family and people in despair, and how we rebuild.

However difficult that may be.
